Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of age, litter size and sex on body weight in SPF New Zealand White rabbits bred in the barrier system. Results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Average body weight and standard deviation were 1,138.8 ¡¾28.0g at 6 weeks of age, 1,964.0¡¾37.0g at 9 weeks of age and 2,944.5¡¾44.0g at 14 weeks of age, respectively; and average daily gains were 28.8 g during 1 to 14 weeks of age. 2. Litter size factor did not show significant difference in body weight, but in the latter part of the suckling period (4 to 7 weeks of age). the rabbits of small litter size (5 to 7 heads) were heavier than the rabbits of large litter size (8 to 9 heads) in body weight; and litter size did not show significant influence on body weight after weaning. 3. Sex factor did not show significant difference in body weight, but female rabbits became heavier than male rabbits in body weight from 12 weeks of age. Results obtained from this study will be utilized for selecting the body weight and age for various toxicological research with SPF rabbits.
